I saw this movie exactly a week ago, and I’m not sure why I haven’t done a review yet, so I am going to throw together a couple of words on it now because people have been asking me about it.
I really enjoyed it. I’ve never seen the original so I had nothing to go on. All I knew is I wanted to see Colin Farrell eating people in more graphic ways than seen on his sex tape.
I had so much fun seeing this in the theatre with 3D, so i’m definitely going to recommend that you do that if you have any interest at all in it. If you keep track of this blog at all you know that I usually hate 3D, but I thought it was really well done in this particular circumstance. It still distracted from the movie, but in a weird way, it worked at enhancing the fun.
If I were to overanalyze this movie (and no one should), I would criticize the dialogue. The funny parts were good (David Tennant has the best lines, and steals the show during all of his scenes), but the rest of the script was just really really bad. At one point, a house blows up, and Toni Colette’s character says, “This is seriously not okay!” LOL. It was almost painful for me to see such an amazing actress as Toni working with such crap, but the rest of the movie made up for it.
I also wasn’t crazy about how emotional and serious it got at times. It’s a horror film, but with a fun, funny vibe. I definitely laughed out loud over and over throughout. They kept it light most of the time, but during other scenes, people died and it wasn’t just blood and guts spewed on screen, it was handled more seriously than that. I think the main thing was just that Anton Yelchin’s such a good actor, and he gave absolutely fantastic looks that showed how traumatized his character was, seeing all this death. His eyes are terrifically expressive, which is especially what made me genuinely sad (I actually teared up at one point), and I don’t doubt we’ll be seeing lots of other great work from him.

The rest of the cast was fantastic too. Colin Farrell played the sexy but terrifying vampire role very well, but he was no Eric Northman or Damon Salvatore, I must say. Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who had one of the best comedy debuts of all time when he starred as McLovin in Superbad, was again great in this role - funny and heartbreaking all at once. I would have liked to see him more. Toni Colette, who we’re used to seeing in the meatiest of meaty roles, was just… there. I know she only did this movie because the director also did The United States of Tara. Still, I love seeing her on screen in any circumstance. I know David Tennant has a ton of die-hard fans out there and you guys will not be disappointed. Like I said, he stole the show every time he was on screen with an absolutely hilarious performance. There is also more to his role than you think, so look out for that.
Overall, this movie is a really fun ride. I especially got deep into it toward the end. It’s just a genuine, real good time at the movies. Highly recommended.
