Anonymous SAID: I disliked Shutter Island. Everyone I know felt it was clever but isn't it essentially an 'it was all just a dream' plot? The whole time you're meant to accept the poor plot devices and sequences and wait for an explanation, which in my mind makes the whole twist not worthwhile. It's as if anything that normally would be criticised is meant to be ignored because the it was all leading up to the twist. But I don't think a giant cliché can excuse the faults within the film. Does that make sense?

It doesn’t make sense to me, haha. I mean, I understand what you’re saying but I completely disagree. I actually find it to be very underrated. That film has so many layers and is just one of the most impeccably produced productions ever and I could go on and on about all the technical stuff, but you seem to be focusing on the story alone so let’s go with that. To me it’s SO MUCH MORE than a creepy thriller with a twist ending. It’s a journey deep into the psyche of someone who is so scarred and tortured that he has no idea what is real and what isn’t and that is beyond fascinating to me. I mean, I can not even imagine what state I would be in if anything remotely that horrible happened to me and I think the way Marty brought the book to the screen was genius (just like everything else he does) and it just really GOT me. It’s almost hard to watch for me because it evokes so many crazy emotions.
